Beauty 101: The Summer Sunburn

Sunburns are nasty, evil situations that the majority of us (big or little) suffer through – especially once summer hits. And with my perfectly pale skin I’m often a target for sunburn if I don’t wear sunscreen – and yesterday was no different! At my company picnic I ended up getting a pretty nice red sunburn from being outdoors so long – and now it hurts, it’s hot and I know the itching and peeling will start in a few days. Yuck.

My burn; in all its glory.

I grew up always using Aloe Vera gel and it works wonders but I was curious … what were some home remedies to try out?

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apparently you can use any type of vinegar but the one that kept popping up in my browser was apple cider vinegar. The vinegar draws the heat out of a sunburn. Spray it on the affected areas or soak in a bath with 2 to 3 cups of vinegar in it.

2. Oatmeal/Baking Soda Baths

This one was kind of surprising to me – I thought either of these two ingredients would dry your skin out which would irritate a sunburn further. Just soak in a cool (not cold) tub with either a few tablespoons of baking soda or 1/2 to 1 cup of oatmeal for 15 to 20 minutes for a soothing sunburn remedy. Remember to air dry!

3. Moisturize

This one seemed like a no brainer – keep moisturized! Sunburns rob our skin of much needed moisture – hence why we normally peel. To counteract that make sure you moisturize after you soak in a bath or take a shower, keep it cool in the fridge to help ease the sting of the burn.

Remember you want to keep hydrated to help your sunburn heal faster and if your burn is severe, blisters appear or you feel sick consult your doctor right away.
